Getting On Board with Chipboard
Available in a variety of shapes and sizes, chipboard is showing up as a standard embellishment on cards, mini albums, 3-D projects like paint cans and especially on scrapbook pages. Chipboard’s versatility is what makes it such a fun and favorable addition to your scrapbook pages, cards, and projects. It is Kraft colored, acid free, made of recycled paper and in the case of the chipboard available from Stampin’ Up!, die-cut ready to press out of 12 x 12 sheets (page 179; 95 elements/shapes for $12.95). Because chipboard is made out of cardboard, stamping directly on it will not leave a crisp clear stamped image. For smoother and crisper images stamp on cardstock or paper first and adhere that to your chipboard or ink or paint the element before stamping. Here’s a list of things you can do with your chipboard pieces to individualize each accent for your projects.
Beads
Apply a layer of Crystal Effects over the whole piece.
Sprinkle on beads. Try using our Duo-Beads with both the larger beads and the
coordinating micro beads for a C-O-O-L effect!
Buttons
Ink piece to desired color. Use Crystal Effects to adhere
buttons as desired. Either this technique or the Beads would make NEAT pins…
just add a pin back to your work.
Classy Brass Stencils
Use a Stylus Tool and Classy Brass Stencil to impress images
into the chipboard. Use either a Classic* or Craft Ink Pad or spot to repeatedly
dab until full coverage is achieved; completely dry or use a Heat Tool to speed
up the process. Sponge the edges of your piece and heat set if desired, or
leave as is. *Note: this may take
several layers if using Classic Ink..
Coloring with Ink Pads or Spots
Use either a Classic* or Craft Ink Pad or spot to repeatedly
dab until full coverage is achieved; completely dry or use a Heat Tool to
speed up the process. Sponge the edges of your piece and heat set if desired,
or leave as is. *Note: this may take
several layers if using Classic Ink.
Coloring with Acrylic Paints
Drip a few drops of Classic Re-inker into some White Acrylic
Paint in a small non-porous bowl or plastic lid; mix together. Use a brush and
paint the mixture on; let dry.
Coloring with Refills using Craft Ink
Drip a few drops of Classic Re-inker into some Craft White
Ink Refill in a small non-porous bowl or plastic lid; mix together. Use a brush
and paint the mixture on; let dry.
Designer Paper Layering
Trace piece onto designer paper and cut out. Apply glue
stick to the entire top piece of chipboard; place designer paper onto this. Use
a sanding block and sand the edges, using a nail file in tight corners.
Distressed Image Stamping
Use your chipboard like stamps. Paint/ink on the reverse
side and press down onto card stock to create a distressed image.
Embossed Image
To stamp your image, use Craft Ink Pad or Spot or VersaMark
Pad. Sprinkle with Clear Embossing Powder and heat. If you use a coordinating
Craft Ink color with your Embossing Powder, your image will be really bold.
Encore Ink
Ink up piece with Encore Gold or Silver Ink; heat set.
Sponge edges and heat set. Seal with cheap hairspray or Acrylic Sealer (may
take more than one application).
Fabric
Use spray adhesive to cover the chipboard evenly and lay on
a scrap of fabric to "dress up" a chipboard element; trim around the
edges.
Finished Look
To finish the "look" don't forget to try these
ideas: 1) tie ribbon around the accent
or punch holes and tie a ribbon through it; 2) add brads or hodgepodge; 3) try layering smaller chipboard elements
onto larger ones; 4) the sky's the
limit!
Flowers Galore
Cover your chipboard with flowers. We have fabulous flower
punches, flowers in the Pretties Kit (that can be easily colored), and more
than 130 individual felt pieces in our Flower Fusion set.
Glassy Glaze
Cover a die cut with ink or paint. When dry, apply VersaMark
and Glassy Glaze Enamel; use the heat tool to melt. Repeat two times for a
total of 3 layers. A COOL look of a tile embellishment!
Glittered Image
Apply a layer of 2-Way Glue to the chipboard piece. Let glue
dry. Once dry, sprinkle Glitter over the piece, tap off excess.
Glitter Look
Use Iridescent Ice embossing powder to achieve the look of
glitter without the "shedding" that may accompany glitter. Press your
inked/painted chipboard element into the VersaMark ink, sprinkle on the
Iridescent Ice, and use the heat tool to melt. Fun and fabulous look!
Hodgepodge Hardware
Depending on hardware piece, apply using Brads or Crystal
Effects.
Kissed
Ink up a background stamp. Place the piece onto the inked
background stamp. Stamp on card stock.
Magic Mesh Scraps
Use up your Magic Mesh scraps by placing on a painted or
inked shape and trim the edges.
Microbeads
Ink up with your favorite of Craft Ink; heat set. Apply a
layer of Crystal Effects over the whole piece; sprinkle on Microbeads.
Pastels
Apply Pastels with Daubers; rub repeatedly blending the
color until desired look is achieved.
Photograph
Trace piece onto photograph; cut out. Apply glue stick to
the entire top piece of chipboard; place photograph onto this. Leave edges as
is or use a sanding block and sand the edges, using a nail file in tight
corners.
Punches, Handheld
Use Handheld Punches to punch desired holes for functional
or decorative use.
Punches
Punch out images from any of our many shapely punches. Apply
images to piece using adhesive or brads.
Pure Color Pencils
Stamp line art images onto piece using Basic Black Ink. Use
Pure Color Pencils to color the piece as desired. For a more watercolor or
smooth look, blend with a Blender Pen.
Ribbons
Apply a layer of adhesive to chipboard piece. Lay desired
ribbon over the top of the piece. Use sharp scissors (try our "steak"
scissors, #108360 Craft and Paper Scissors) to trim off any excess. Crystal
Effects can be applied to the edges to stop fraying.
Rub-ons
Color rub-ons are a no-muss way to dress up plain chipboard
pieces. Go a step further by tracing around each rub-on with the Zig Painty pen
in gold or silver (both choices on same pen).
Sand
Use the Xyron, spray adhesive or VersaMark and Heat &
Stick to adhere sand to the chipboard die cut, pressing down on the sand; tap
excess sand off. Accessorize with funky ribbon or raffia and use it along with
a few small shells on your "fun in the sun" page.
Sanding Chipboard
Apply ink, paint or designer papers and the take the Sanding
Block to the edges.
Stamping Images
Ink with Craft Pad. Stamp image using Classic Ink. For a
brighter image, use Craft Ink to stamp your image. Don't be afraid to get
creative. You don't need to just use White Craft Ink. Black inked words on a
heart painted red, for instance, can be quite dramatic. Or try inking on your
alphabet stamps.
Stenciling from Chipboard Negatives
Because the chipboard comes on a 12 x 12 sheet, you can use
the chipboard 'template,' that the letters and shapes come in, to trace onto
regular card stock, too!
Stickers
Still have unused alphabet or misc. stickers around. Place
them collage style on your chipboard.
Stitched with Linen Thread
Use Handheld Punches to punch holes as desired. Use a needle
and Linen Thread to stitch.
Watercolor Wonder Crayons
Stamp piece with Basic Black Classic Ink. Use a Blender Pen
and color with Watercolor Wonder Crayons.
Wheeled
Use a wheel to wheel over your piece, starting and ending
off the piece.
